Hugo Helmer Music houses on site lesson studios that we offer to local teachers in an attempt to further music education in the Skagit Valley.  The teachers at Hugo Helmer Music are independent contractors who do all of their own scheduling and billing independent of Hugo Helmer Music.  If you would like more information regarding lessons at Hugo's please feel free to contact us or one or more of the teachers below.

David Sloat

David Sloat has a Master of Music degree in voice and a Bachelor of Arts in music (voice and piano).  He began playing piano at the ripe old age of 6 years and started singing publicly two years later.  As a professor, David just finished 30 years teaching voice, piano, choir, and academic courses for music majors and minors at the two-year college level.  His teaching and performance experience includes Classical, gospel, jazz, musical theater, opera and pop music styles.  Former students have worked with Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony Chorus, National Symphony Chorus, Pasadena Playhouse, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (New York and Los Angeles), and the New York Philharmonic, as well as numerous All-State choirs, gospel, pop, and rock bands.  David often says to students that "music is the metaphor, but the lesson is life"--enjoy and use it to reach out and connect to others!

Richard Rorex

Rich holds a Master's Degree in Teaching, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music and is well versed in several styles of Music.  Rich offers something for everyone, whether you are a beginner of someone looking to add to your skill set he can custom tailor a lesson plan the fits your needs.  Rich teaches modern and traditional styles of guitar such as Rock, Blues, Jazz, Bossa Nova and Classical.  Rich also teaches Ukulele and Bass Guitar.

John Malone

John teaches acoustic and electric guitar.  John has a lot of real world playing experience.  He began playing professionally at the age of 14 and has played in both touring and local bands for most of his life.   John has been teaching guitar for over 30 years.  His "have fun while learning to play" approach has been a big hit with students.  Starting with basics and hand exercises you will be amazed with how fast you can learn to play your favorite songs.

Kit Mills

Kit teaches all styles of drum set, concert and rudimental snare drum, mallet percussion, and hand percussion. An award-winning ASCAP composer holding degrees from Wheaton College (BMus, 2000) and Western Oregon University (MMus, 2015), Kit also teaches composition, music theory, and songwriting.

Since beginning his career as a music instructor in 2004, Kit has worked with over 200 private students and as a clinician and solo performer has presented to more than 2,000 others throughout the Pacific Northwest. Past students have auditioned successfully into the United States Army Band, the Seattle Seahawks' Blue Thunder Drumline, the Seattle Cascades Drum Corps, CalArts, Cornish College of the Arts, Western Washington University--to name a few--while winning numerous solo and ensemble contest performance awards on both regional and state levels. Kit loves to teach and seeks to help students exceed their own expectations on the way to personal awesomeness, both as musicians and people.
